Columbia Engineering's Awards of Distinction

A special off-campus dinner celebrated the recipients of Columbia Engineering’s top student prizes, to be awarded at Class Day May 18.

Guests included valedictorian and the Illig Medal recipient Nicole Lee Major; salutatorian Andrew Kaluzny; and graduate student speaker Marina Fahim MS’15. They gathered at the home of alumni Arie Hochberg MS’79, EngScD’84 and Elaine Hochberg ’82GS, ’85BUS on Manhattan’s upper west side along with faculty, staff, distinguished alumni, and an array of prizewinners, both graduates and undergraduates who have made distinctive contributions to their research interests and the School.

These students included:

  • Cathy Chen MS’11, MPhil’13, PhD’15, Ahmet-Hamdi Cavusoglu BS’09, MS’11, PhD’15, and Dustin Tran MS’15, the Graduate Student Life Award;
  • Jonathan Weisz PhD’15, the Morton B. Friedman Memorial Prize for Excellence;
  • Tolulope Olatokunbo Akinade BS’15, the George Vincent Wendell Memorial Medal;
  • Mariah Gladstone BS’15, the Student Activities Award;
  • Elizabeth Carrolo BS’15, the Bernard Jaffe Prize for the Encouragement of Inventiveness in Engineering;
  • Joshua Boggs BS’15, the Distinguished Student Leadership Award;
  • Shensi Ding BS’15, president of the Class of 2015 and vice chair of the SEAS Senior Fund; and
  • Madison Friedman BS’15, chair of the SEAS Senior Fund.
